There are many reasons for graphite electrode breakage, but mainly it is caused by external force. As showed in below picture, The force acting on the graphite electrode is decreasing from top to bottom, and the force reaches maximum under the electrode holder.
l The electrode will break off on condition the external force is bigger than its strength. Here are some main causes of external forces, such as the collapsing of large material, the crashing of non-conductive objects in furnaces.
l Fast lifting speed of electrode holder, graphite electrode and the hole are not in a line vertically, insufficient strength nipple
l Poor precision machining on electrode and nipples also causes breaking off.
